Departmental Procedure of Bridge Works

The procedure is summarized below:

  1. Survey data for a proposed bridge site is to be submitted by the Field Executive Engineer.
  2. The proposed site is visited by the concerned Design Unit Executive Engineer or SE (Design) depending upon the length of the bridge.
  3. Inspection Note is issued to the Field Executive Engineer after the site visit.
  4. Once complete data is available with the Design Division, hydraulics of the proposed bridge is carried out and RTL, length and other details are finalized.
  5. General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) is prepared and along with technical note issued to the Field Executive Engineer.
  6. Estimate based on GAD is prepared by Field Executive Engineer, checked and countersigned by Design Circle.
  7. If tenders are invited on B1/B2 form, detailed drawings are issued for construction.
  8. If tenders are invited on Lump sum (“C” form), Design Criteria is issued. Contractor’s designs are proof checked by Design Circle.

Codes and Specifications

Deputy Engineers in the Designs Circle are expected to prepare proposals, undertake detailed designs and scrutinize contractor’s designs. Hence knowledge of IRC / IS codes is essential.
