Embankment & Subgrade Construction Methodology
1. Executive Summary & Earthwork Fundamentals
The construction of highway embankments and subgrades forms the foundation of flexible and rigid pavement structures. The subgrade layer acts as the primary support bed for load distribution, requiring stringent control over soil compaction, moisture content, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and level tolerances. Unsuitable soils (such as expansive black cotton clay or marshy organic earth) must be identified early to prevent differential settlement and subgrade pumping.
2. Sequential Execution Guidelines
Phase 1: Ground Level Survey & Subsoil Inspection
Original Ground Levels (OGL) are jointly verified by the Contractor and the Construction Supervision Consultant (CSC). The underlying terrain is checked for unsuitable materials:
Phase 2: Moisture Control & Compaction Rolling
Approved borrow earth is spread uniformly. Water is added via calibrated sprinklers or the soil is aerated to maintain the moisture window between +2% and -1% of Optimum Moisture Content (OMC). Compaction is carried out using heavy smooth-wheel or vibratory rollers for 8 to 10 passes.
Phase 3: Density, Level & Structural Strength Testing
Each compacted lift is verified against structural specifications before allowing subsequent layer placement:
- Field Moisture Content (FMC): Verified to be within OMC ±2%.
- Field Dry Density (FDD): Evaluated using Sand Replacement or Core Cutter methods. Minimum compaction criteria are ≥97% MDD for embankment bodies and ≥98% MDD for top subgrade layers.
- California Bearing Ratio (CBR): Tested at target MDD and OMC to ensure design strength values are met. If CBR falls short, soil classification, sieve analysis, and Atterberg limits tests are re-evaluated to determine suitability or replacement needs.
Phase 4: Lift Thickness Limits
3. Quality Control & Material Testing Specifications
| Quality Assurance Parameter | Embankment Specification | Subgrade Specification |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum Field Compaction (MDD) | ≥ 97% of Maximum Dry Density | ≥ 98% of Maximum Dry Density |
| Moisture Control Range | OMC -1% to +2% | OMC -1% to +2% |
| Surface Level Tolerance | ± 25 mm | ± 15 mm |
| Maximum Loose Layer Thickness | ≤ 250 mm | ≤ 200 mm – 250 mm |
| CBR Acceptance Limit | As per design (typically ≥ 3%–5%) | As per design (typically ≥ 8%–10%) |
| Atterberg Limits Limits | Liquid Limit (LL) < 50%; PI < 25% | Liquid Limit (LL) < 40%; PI < 15% |
