Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) & Bituminous Concrete (BC) Construction Methodology
1. Executive Summary & Structural Layer Dynamics
Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) serves as the primary structural binder course, while Bituminous Concrete (BC) acts as the premium wearing course in flexible highway pavements. Both layers rely on tightly controlled hot-mix production, precise delivery temperatures, engineered rolling sequences, and strict volumetric density targets to prevent rutting, fatigue cracking, and moisture-induced stripping.
2. Sequential Execution Guidelines
Phase 1: Surface Preparation & Weather Protocols
The receiving surface (prepared WMM or DBM layer) must be thoroughly cleaned of loose dirt, dust, and organic matter using mechanical brooms and air compressors. A uniform tack coat is sprayed using a self-propelled pressure distributor.
Phase 2: Hot-Mix Transport & Temperature Monitoring
Paving mixtures produced in batch-type Hot Mix Plants (HMP) are delivered in insulated, tarpaulin-covered tippers. Mix temperatures are measured continuously at discharge, delivery, and laydown points. Any batch falling below statutory thermal limits (specified by IRC:111-2009 / MoRTH Section 500) must be rejected.
Phase 3: Three-Stage Rolling & Compaction Sequence
Compaction must follow immediately behind the sensor paver at speeds non-exceeding 5 km/h across three structured phases:
- Breakthrough / Initial Rolling: Conducted using 8–10 Ton static smooth-wheeled rollers or light vibratory rollers.
- Intermediate Rolling: Executed using 10–12 Ton Pneumatic Tyred Rollers (PTR) with an inflated tyre pressure of 0.56 MPa (or heavy vibratory rollers) to achieve dense aggregate interlock.
- Finish Rolling: Completed with an 8–10 Ton tandem smooth steel roller to eliminate roller marks and seal the surface.
Phase 4: Quality Verification & Traffic Release
3. Quality Control & Acceptance Specifications
| Control Parameter | Standard Specification Limit | Testing Frequency / Standard Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum Laying Temperature | 130°C to 150°C (depending on Bitumen Grade VG-30/VG-40) | Every truck load via digital probe thermometer |
| Minimum Ambient Paving Temp | ≥ 10°C in shade | Before starting daily operations |
| PTR Tyre Inflation Pressure | 0.56 MPa (80 psi) minimum | Daily pressure checks |
| Roller Wheel Overlap | ≥ 1/3 wheel width (Steel); ≥ 300 mm (PTR) | Continuous visual monitoring during rolling |
| Core Extraction Frequency | 1 core per 700 m² of laid area | ASTM D5361 / Field core cutter |
| Compaction Requirement ($G_{mm}$) | ≥ 92% of Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity | AASHTO T209 / Lab Rice Density Test |
| Surface Level Tolerance | -6 mm to +6 mm | Cross-section levelling every 10 meters |
| Maximum Thermal Threshold for Traffic | ≤ 60°C surface temperature | Surface infrared thermometer before lane opening |
